XML Imports for Job Tracking Software

Quite often when planning for the implementation of a Job Tracking Software system, clients will request the orders and individual order line items be imported from a sales order software system their company already has in-place. Sales software has been used in manufacturing industries for quite some time, beginning with “legacy” systems in the 1980s. Some of these systems have matured through the years, with their underlying technologies being upgraded to work on newer operating systems. Also, some newer sales systems have also been developed for specific industries. A recent development has been the usage of XML, or Extensible Markup Language, to store small portions of data or transferring data between different software systems. Written as simple text files, XML files look very similar to the HTML used for the development and displaying of web pages. However, XML is considerably different from HTML in that the labels used for the information within the XML file can be changed for specific purposes, and that XML is not used to display web pages.

A sales software system might have the capability of exporting complete orders as XML, which contains the order number and customer information. It will also have individual sections which break down each line item on the order into its individual fields. These line items can then be marked individually with the vendor for that particular item, including multiple vendors per order.

A Job Tracking Software system which knows how the XML is set up within the sales system could easily read an exported XML file when asked and import all the information for that order. It can then look at that order and the order’s line items and deal with the information appropriately as part of the Job Tracking Software.

Job Tracking Software systems which incorporate newer technologies and follow industry and company standards will also likely to be able to incorporate data from other systems on an as-needed basis. It’s really just a matter of communicating openly on such issues.
